DETOXIFICATION PROGRAM

  Why?

Every day we are exposed to toxins in air, water, food and our environment, from new carpet and fresh paint, to old upholstery and second hand smoke. For most people, small doses cause cumulative damage rather than immediate symptoms. Continued exposure and/or decreased liver function can compromise natural detoxification systems, causing the body to store toxins rather than eliminate them.
Accumulation of toxins in the body can lead to general malaise or specific health problems, including fatigue, decreased mental acuity, skin and digestive conditions, food and chemical sensitivities, joint and muscle pain. Clearing toxins from the body can relieve symptoms and renew wellness and vitality.

  Who?

Most people can benefit from detoxification. It is especially important for those who have had a toxic exposure, but individuals with chronic health problems that have been unresponsive to other treatment may also experience relief.

A detox is a great way to kick off a healthier diet and lifestyle. It provides structure for better nutrition, regular exercise and relaxation. When people have a hard time making these changes on their own, a detailed plan can support a smooth transition.

Individuals who should not attempt detoxification include breast-feeding women and those with kidney disease or constipation. Individuals with liver or gastrointestinal conditions, and those taking pharmaceutical medications, should talk to their doctor before attempting detox.

  How?

The liver is the primary organ responsible for changing toxic chemicals into compounds that the body can excrete through the four routes of elimination. These include the bowels, urine, sweat and breath.

Dr. Cimperman’s detoxification program includes four components designed to optimize liver function and elimination pathways:

  • Hypoallergenic and Anti-Inflammatory Diet

This diet is designed to improve elimination through the bowel and urine. Increasing consumption of healthy, hypoallergenic foods while reducing exposure to inflammatory and irritating foods will also optimize gastrointestinal function.

Eating adequate amounts of calories, protein, vitamins and minerals is essential for optimal elimination of toxins. The detox diet includes certain vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Some fish is allowed during the first and last phases.

After the two-week detox program, a food reintroduction diet is optional but recommended to identify food sensitivities and explore connections between certain foods and specific symptoms.
  • Supplemental Nutrients

A medical food, composed of hypoallergenic rice protein powder fortified with vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other nutrients, is used in varying amounts over the two-week program. It provides macronutrient and micronutrient elements necessary for detoxification and elimination in a pleasant-tasting drink.

Individualized detox programs may include additional supplements, depending on specific symptoms, health conditions, personal goals or toxic exposure.
  • Exercise

Physical and breathing exercises open two important routes of elimination: sweat and breath. They also reduce stress, increase circulation and improve energy, immunity, sleep, mood, balance and coordination.
  • Hydrotherapy

The therapeutic use of hot and cold water is used to increase circulation and improve elimination. Procedures are easy and can be performed at home.

  When?

Dr. Cimperman’s detoxification program usually lasts two weeks. A prolonged program may be prescribed for specific individuals.

Detox can be done as part of a wellness plan for certain health problems when symptoms arise, or for disease prevention. Seasonal or annual detoxification can help maintain wellness and give the body a break from routine exposure to everyday toxins.
